WHAT:
Recent increases in state and federal transportation funding have allowed Ohio to make needed improvements to the condition, safety and efficiency of the state’s roads and bridges. While this additional funding has been helpful, many needed projects will not proceed due to a lack of available funding. This is according to a new report from TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit based in Washington, DC, which looks at the condition and use of Ohio’s system of roads, highways and bridges.
Local speakers will join TRIP at a virtual news conference on Tuesday to highlight the report’s findings. The report, “Keeping Ohio Mobile: Providing a Modern, Sustainable Transportation System in the Buckeye State,” examines road and bridge conditions, congestion and reliability, economic development, highway safety, COVID-19’s impact on vehicle travel trends and the impact of recent transportation funding increases in the state. In addition to statewide data, the report also includes data breakdowns for the Cincinnati/Dayton, Cleveland/Akron, Columbus and Toledo areas. The report includes a list of more than $1.4 billion in transportation projects that have been able to move forward with the additional funding, and a list of $1.6 billion in projects that remain stalled due to lack of funds.
A link to a video containing TRIP spokesperson comments on the report’s findings for the Cincinnati area will also be posted on the TRIP website at 10:00 a.m. EST on January 9.
