WHAT:

While additional state and federal transportation investment will allow North Carolina to make needed improvements to its network of roads and bridges, as rising inflation erodes purchasing power, further investment will be needed to complete needed projects. This is according to a new report from TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit based in Washington, DC, that looks at the condition, efficiency and funding needs of North Carolina’s system of roads, highways and bridges. In addition to statewide data, the report includes regional breakdowns for the Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Triad and Wilmington urban areas.

Local speakers will join TRIP at a virtual news conference on Wednesday to highlight the report’s findings. The report, “Moving North Carolina Forward: Providing a Modern, Reliable and Sustainable Transportation System in the Tar Heel State,” examines road and bridge conditions, congestion and reliability, economic development, highway safety, the impact of COVID-19 on vehicle travel trends, and the impact of recent transportation funding increases at the federal level and in the state.

A link to a video containing TRIP spokesperson comments on the report’s findings and an overview of the data for the Asheville area will be posted on the TRIP website at 10:00 a.m. EDT on April 19.
