Report available on TRIP website at 10:00 a.m. ET.
WHAT:
Approximately 10.1 million vehicles travel across bridges in poor condition in Pennsylvania each day. This is according to a new report from TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit based in Washington, DC. Bridges that are rated in poor condition have significant deterioration to the major components of the bridge. Local speakers will join TRIP at a virtual news conference on Thursday to highlight the findings of the report.
The report, Preserving Pennsylvania’s Bridges: The Condition and Funding Needs of Pennsylvania’s Aging Bridge System, finds that despite substantial improvements in Pennsylvania’s bridge conditions over the past decade, significant deficiencies remain and additional funding is needed to avoid a reversal of recent bridge improvements. The report includes lists of bridges in the state’s largest urban areas with the lowest average rating for the deck, substructure and superstructure, and a list of the most heavily traveled area bridges that are rated in poor condition.
In addition to analysis of statewide bridge conditions and trends, the report includes regional data and lists of bridges in poor condition in the Erie, Harrisburg, Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre areas.
